Nursery Plans for Baby Girl

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

As soon as I found out that we were having another girl, I knew that I wanted her nursery to be totally different than Harper's was. I knew we would reuse our Jenny Lind crib, glider & changing table but, they are all very neutral so they are easy to work with. We decided to go with white walls, bright, bold pops of purple, natural wood tones & gold accents!!! So so so excited for this color combo!
This shade of purple is hard. I have always loved it but always shy away since it's impossible to find multiple things in the same shade. I like to refer to it as "neon lilac," can't remember where I saw that once, but it stuck with me & I feel like it describes the color that I am always drawn to just perfectly. Then all of a sudden Radiant Orchid is the color of the year, so there are beautiful shades of purple everywhere! This is where the fun part comes in. In order to really incorporate all of the colors that I wanted, I decided to paint my own giant canvas to hang above the crib! I haven't painted since college, so it was really fun to get everything out again & make something special for the room. I am so happy with the way it turned out & hope that it is a piece of art that we can keep around forever!

And, with the most fun collaboration ever, I got to work with my sweet friend Erin of Candy Kirby Designs to come up with the most beautiful fabric inspired by the painting! I can't wait to share more details!! Do you spy some of the fabric tucked in the basket?! :)
Here is the look we are going for in the space!I will be using a gold lacquer tray that I already had on the changing table to hold some essentials, along with a few neutral baskets around the room to hold books & stuffed animals. I have loved these star print swaddle blankets forever so I am excited to use them in the room, along with a gold polka dot sheet for the crib. Swoon! I am still on the hunt for the perfect crib skirt & changing pad cover.I also love the idea of a gold leather pouf as the ottoman to the glider, but not so sure how functional it would be, especially for the high price. And of course, a tissue tassel garland is a must! :)
Here are a few "before" pictures of the room, it is a little bigger than Harper's but gets less light. I haven't decided if I really like the archway window, but it is getting covered either way by bamboo blinds (the same ones we have in our dining room) because I want the light to be blocked out for the baby to be able to sleep.

Next steps are assembling Harper's big girl bed, moving it to her room & putting the crib in here as soon as the paint is fully finished. Then we will work on window treatments, adding a rug & continuing to switch furniture from one room to another. Good thing we still have three months.
Hope you enjoyed the first little bits of baby girl's nursery! I can't wait to see all the other amazing Radiant Orchid goodies that pop up over the next few months that we may be able to incorporate in the room! :)XO

I love the gold dots decals from Land of Nod so we're thinking about using those on the wall. Looks like we're on the same wavelength!

Wondering what tools you used to paint the canvas...brushes? Stencil? I also haven't painted since college but would love to get into it again!

ReplyDeleteRepliesJessicaJanuary 21, 2014 at 3:48 PMThank you! Just brushes, some old ones I have had forever & acrylic paints. No stencils. I was literally just winging it, if you've done it in college I'm sure it will come right back to you!! :)

DeleteReplynatasha {schue love}January 21, 2014 at 10:42 AMBrilliant that the color of the year matches your aesthetic for Baby #2's room! Love the colors...especially the warm wood tone, which helps make the room feel that much more cozy! xx

ReplyDeleteRepliesJessicaJanuary 21, 2014 at 3:48 PMThanks love!! It couldn't have worked out better, I almost did this for Harper's room initially (and her first birthday colors) but glad I waited! ;) XO

DeleteReplyMarissa SaundersJanuary 21, 2014 at 10:44 AMI look forward to seeing the finished product! I LOVE the painting and I think you have inspired me to paint my own. ;) xoxo

I think your new little gal might need a hat from my shop @spottedpony_handmade (on IG). I've got neon violet yarn that would fit right in! ;)

ReplyDeleteRepliesJessicaJanuary 21, 2014 at 3:50 PMThanks so much! Girls rooms are so fun to decorate but I always envisioned a dark navy nursery if we ever had a boy! ;) I think my husband is glad he isn't getting roped into painting another dark room.

DeleteJennifer JenkinsJanuary 21, 2014 at 5:53 PMI love using dark colors too. We did our sons in gray, red & black. It wasn't easy but it turned out great. Navy would be super cute! You could always do Navy, Pink & white for a girl ;)

ReplyDeleteSeriously SerendipityJanuary 21, 2014 at 11:12 AMI love the purple. My girls share a room, but I wanted to change it up from nursery decor to something else they can both enjoy. Thanks for the inspiration. Are you changing up Harper's decor too?

ReplyDeleteRepliesJessicaJanuary 21, 2014 at 3:53 PMThank you! Harper's room plans were posted a week or two ago & I made another smaller painting for her room, but decided to use it in our bathroom instead. But I have a few other ideas for artwork in her room, just need to find some time! ;)

DeleteReplyAshley @ Words About WaverlyJanuary 21, 2014 at 11:15 AMLove it! I teach fashion & was just going over Pantone's color of the year with my class! Baby girl Garvin is already SO very on trend! ;) And I would have a hard time saying no to that pouf, I have had my eye on it for months!!!!!

ReplyDeleteRepliesJessicaJanuary 21, 2014 at 3:54 PMThat's how I felt too, very subtle colors in Harper's original nursery so now I want to do things a little differently as I redo both rooms! :) But you can never go wrong with grey & white in my mind!

DeleteReplyBrandiJanuary 21, 2014 at 11:40 AMLove it all so very much! I've had girl nursery plans for as far as I can remember and they involve a gold polka dot wall and some of this beautiful purple as well. I've never been one for baby pink or most hues of pink for that matter but THIS color I LOVE! So excited to see you use it in the nursery and if anything live a little vicariously through your nursery until we get a girl :)

ReplyDeleteRepliesJessicaJanuary 21, 2014 at 3:55 PMThank you!! I'm sure you would just have a ball decorating for a baby girl too! ;)

DeleteReplyKatie BallJanuary 21, 2014 at 2:50 PMGorgeous! I love the purple and gold combination. Very sophisticated, but still girly and childlike. I'm interested to see what other colors you bring into the room - I think teal and aqua would be pretty accents!

ReplyDeleteRepliesJessicaJanuary 21, 2014 at 4:11 PMI was definitely thinking mint, I found a tissue garland with those colors together & it sealed the deal! :) Thank you!

DeleteReplyJaymeLeeOJanuary 21, 2014 at 2:55 PMI love that color combo. I've been trying to figure out what color I want to pair with gold and this is beautiful! I originally had gold and navy, but it was too nautical and "boy-ish", even though I envisioned elegant and sophisticated. I'll have to think about this one! :)

ReplyDeleteRepliesJessicaJanuary 21, 2014 at 4:11 PMOh I love gold & navy too! :)

DeleteReplyBrett and NikkiJanuary 21, 2014 at 3:26 PMSo I know you are only painting for fun, but seriously if you ever want to do one for money I'd totally commission one. We have been trying to find the perfect piece of art for our living room, and your style is exactly what we want and cannot find! So if you change your mind, please please let me know! I can't wait to see the rest of this nursery. You are such a huge inspiration to me; I'm so excited to see how it all comes together.

ReplyDeleteRepliesJessicaJanuary 21, 2014 at 4:14 PMThank you, you are too sweet! You should check out One Kings Lane, they have great sales on abstract style paintings like this! :) I wish I could do these to sell in my shop but I wouldn't know where to start to do reproductions & I can guarantee none would ever turn out how I envisioned if I needed them to. But I appreciate the encouragement & support! XO

ReplyDeleteRepliesJessicaJanuary 21, 2014 at 4:17 PMThank you!! I am not planning to sell paintings, although it would be fun! :) And the fabric belongs to CKD, although it was a collaboration to make the design, she will be the one selling it as part of her line. I will be sure to share when she has some in stock! :)

DeleteReplyTarenJanuary 21, 2014 at 4:17 PMI love the painting! Although I'm sure everyone would buy it if you sold it as a canvas or a print, I think it's so cool if you keep it just for your daughter. One day she may have it hanging above her couch in her very first apartment and it'll be a Jessica Garvin original.
