With Harper's second birthday just around the corner & a new nursery that needs finished shortly after that, we are finally making progress on Harper's big girl room!! We decided go ahead with a twin bed, rather than a toddler bed, so it is something that she can keep for quite a few years. It will be up against the wall to start, with a rail to make sure she doesn't fall out. Harper is a pretty good (and still) sleeper, so we are hoping the transition from crib to big girl bed goes smoothly. I have heard a lot of mixed opinions about when is a good time to make the transition, but a lot of my mama friends have had a ton of success doing it before age two, so rather than buying a second crib & attempting this transition after the baby comes, we are doing it sooner than later. I'm sure I will be eating my words in no time after Harper sneaks out of bed & colors on the walls, but for now, I am optimistic.
The plans for her room are to keep the wall color (light grey/white) but add lots of pops of color & playful, whimsical accents. I wanted to incorporate a lot of the things that she already had in her nursery, her blankets, stuffed animals & the stools that we had next to her rocker. The rocker will go into the baby's room so we are bringing the teepee upstairs in it's place, which I'm sure is really going to encourage her to stay in bed at night. ;)
I found some super colorful string ball lights to hang & will also be bringing in a tassel garland that uses some of the colors from the bedding, which is made in the Alexander Henry Market Stalls fabric that I love so much.
Jenny Lind Twin Bed \\ Dip-Dyed Stools \\ Pig RockerZinc Letters \\ Teepee \\ Faux Fur Pillow \\ Star Pillow \\ Fox BlaBla Doll
Harper loves her books so much & loves to pick out which ones to read each night. So we will be adding another photo ledge like the ones in the playroom to display some of her prettiest books! ;) The Cat at Night, Flora and the Flamingo
, Madeline
& Alice in Wonderland
are my favorites! I found a few large baskets at our local HomeGoods for the rest, which will also help with storage for her other toys. She also loves all of her headbands & playing dress-up, so I'd love to find a fun way to incorporate that in the room as well. And some new art (some easy DIYs that I will share once they're finished!) will fill the white matted frames from her old nursery.
I found an old dresser on craigslist, something simple with clean lines but that would go well with the vintage look of the bed. I think the legs compliment it really well. Brandon is in the process of doing a little handywork to one of the drawers & also arguing with me about whether or not we should paint it. He says no. I say yes. :) I think it might just be too dark for the look I want in Harper's room, but to be fair, painting furniture is a bitch. I envision it in a medium grey/purplish color (like the one swatch above) or maybe even in a vibrant pink/coral like the pig! We will also switch out the hardware so picking something out is on my to-do list this weekend.
As soon as the dresser is finished & the soon-to-be nursery is painted, we will be able to start switching things around. We hope to have her room completed before her birthday!
Time to get to work! :)
XO

TiffanyJanuary 7, 2014 at 11:53 AMSo cute! Harper's a little younger than our daughter, but we did the same thing in moving her to a big girl bed sooner rather than later knowing we were expecting #2 (March for us!). Our transition has been tough, but my only advice would be to think about what rules you want to have in place about her getting out of bed. Is it ok if she gets out of bed and comes to your room? Does she have to stay in bed until you come get her? We did not set any rules at first and now are struggling to keep our sweet daughter from running down the hall to our room in the middle of the night! We ended up getting a toddler clock which turns green when "it's ok to come to mom and dad's room." We've had limited success with that! Good luck! Every child is different so I hope it's a smooth transition for you!ReplyDelete

ErinIXJanuary 7, 2014 at 12:14 PMReally very nice. The color scheme is delicate and whimsical. A dreamy room perfect for a little girl to grow with. That dresser is perfection. I hate to see it painted, but then again, I adore dark wood! Good luck, Mr. Garvin lolReplyDelete

The MaconsJanuary 7, 2014 at 2:21 PMYup set some rules, ours isn't allowed to get out of bed, period. If she needs something she may call us (like to potty) but other than that, stay quiet and in your bed until your light turns green. (She has an alarm clock). We went to the big bed at 17 months just to see what happened and using these rules it is still working great! Good luck and can't wait to see the nursery!ReplyDelete
Sue IuloJanuary 7, 2014 at 2:22 PMLove! I cannot wait to do Sophie's big girl room. My husband wants us to keep her in her crib for a long time yet lol. Excited to see the nursery plans too. ReplyDelete
Sarah WilsonJanuary 7, 2014 at 2:24 PMWise choice on making the transition now! We did the same thing with our oldest (my kids are two years apart to the day). There were bumps in the road once she figured out how to get out of the bed, how to open her door, etc., but I think making the transition before the baby #2 arrived meant we were better able to respond to and support her throughout the change. Plus I think it eliminated the thought that the new baby was causing all of these changes (taking her crib, parents, etc.). Good luck!!http://herbsandspiceandallthingsnice.blogspot.comReplyDelete
Shelby McClureJanuary 7, 2014 at 2:25 PMLove all of the DIY ideas! It's so great that you found the dresser on Craigslist. Being on-trend does NOT have to break the bank. Can't wait to see the finished product!ReplyDelete

DorindaJanuary 7, 2014 at 2:42 PMI LOVE IT and can't wait to see the finish look. My 19 month old rebelled against her crib so we made the transition to a twin too! It hasn't been to bad except actual bed time, it's hard to convince her to stay in bed. ReplyDelete

Kelsey @ Random RandtsJanuary 7, 2014 at 4:16 PMTeam Paint all the way!! It's so much more fun and girly!!! If you use chalk paint...you won't need to sand or prime. Annie Sloan makes great stuff. I've also heard about a line from Home Depot, called Americana Decor!! ReplyDelete
Amanda JaeJanuary 7, 2014 at 4:30 PMSo excited for the changes you're going through! As the daughter of a general contractor (who once went behind his back and painted the beautiful dark wood dresser he'd recently bought me) I say don't paint it! Painting dark wood is twice the paint of light wood and it looks to be a large enough dresser that it could suit her for a good while. Who knows what color scheme she'll be in to down the road! Give it a pretty coat of poly and call it a day :)ReplyDelete
Sara S.January 7, 2014 at 4:42 PMYou can always consider Annie Sloane Chalk paint! :) No priming or sanding required and comes in some great colors!
(or you can mix to create your own color)
Easy cheese!

Jocelyn GoldsmithJanuary 7, 2014 at 5:03 PMAdorable! If you decide to paint the dresser check out Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. No priming and beautiful colors to work with! http://www.anniesloan.com/acatalog/paints.html
I can't wait to see the finished room! At 27 weeks pregnant with a 17 month old, I am also working on a new baby girl nursery and a big girl room, so your blog is inspiring.
Happy New Year!

Christine HafeleJanuary 7, 2014 at 5:16 PMI can't wait to see her room and the nursery! I can't believe Harper is already going to be 2? I swear you were just posting about her first birthday! I vote that the dresser gets painted and I think a vibrant pink/coral would look AWESOME! I'm itching to paint a dresser that color myself!ReplyDelete
AnonymousJanuary 7, 2014 at 5:27 PMMake sure to secure that dresser to the wall, the legs on carpet would make it tip easily if climbed in by a curious little person who snuck out of her big girl bed. Sorry, that's just the nervous belly in me. I think chalk paint would look great on it too.ReplyDelete
HollyJanuary 7, 2014 at 5:51 PMI just finished my 18mos old daughters room. I have a couple pics on my Instagram @holly_hop I painted the walls sand dollar & then painted trim, door, & baseboard cotton candy pink. I also painted a wardrobe I bought second hand cotton candy pink. So you could always do your trim & baseboard same color as the dresser for a pop of color. We also cut her door in half. This way she can't get out & color lol and it works like a gate for those times I need her contained. Good luck. Can't wait to see the outcome. Love your blog!ReplyDelete
karleeJanuary 7, 2014 at 7:29 PMThat dresser was a great find! I'm normally all for painting furniture but I think I would have a hard time painting that one!ReplyDelete
AshleighJanuary 7, 2014 at 7:53 PMWe transitioned my daughter to a twin bed around 17 months so we had plenty of time before her brother came and she did awesome! She's still a great sleeper and has maybe gotten out of her bed 3 times, in the last year that she's been in it. She still even waits for us to come in and get her in the morning. Hope Harper does great!ReplyDelete
Mrs. CJanuary 7, 2014 at 8:42 PMLove everything about this big girl room! We're thinking about making the crib-toddler bed switch soon too, it's crazy how time flies! Also, I am sure you've already thought of this, but I saw a heartbreaking blog post a while back about a little girl who was tragically killed when her dresser fell on her. I felt like an idiot, because I hadn't thought about anchoring my son's dresser to the wall prior to hearing this story. Even if you've heard about this before, I thought it was worth sharing for your readers: http://www.meghanshope.org. ReplyDelete

AnonymousJanuary 7, 2014 at 9:13 PMWe transitioned our daughter at 20 months, 2 months before her baby brother arrived. We also put her twinbed against the wall with a rail (skipping the whole toddler bed). To be honest, because we put it in the frame and it's up high, she doesn't know how or doesn't think she can climb out so it's a win/win. When she wakes up, she calls for us and we come get her! Oh, and I love that dresser that color....team don't paint!ReplyDelete
DianaJanuary 7, 2014 at 9:19 PMI transitioned both of mine right at 2! One a week before his bday (I had to buy two cribs so he had been in his new room for a while just not the big bed). He stayed in his bed, even when he woke in the morning until we got him. With my second since he was moving to a whole new room, for his 2nd bday he got his big boy room (both straight to twin beds) and we spent 2-3 weeks playing in there and reading our bedtime stories in there before the big move. First sleep in there was at naptime- both never looked back! My 2nd will get out of bed but gets back in via his Ikea stool. We also have big floor pillows from company kids and I had an area where they get up (at head of bed) and down at floor pillow the right way (on yummy; feet first). Harper will do great! Good luck fellow pregger!ReplyDelete
LeslieJanuary 7, 2014 at 10:11 PMI think you're doing it right getting Harper into her big girl bed before the baby comes!!! I always made that transition before the next one was born. Sure I needed the crib! But also helps the child to understand she's no longer a baby! A "BIG" girl now and that the baby is the baby! You'll have some tears and fights with her once the baby comes, totally normal as she's trying to adjust to sharing your attention with the baby. I think it's normal with all kids adjusting to that second sibling. PLUS she's at the terrible 2's age!! 😉 lol. I had that problem with my first to my second! It was hard but we got through it just like you will too. ☺️ ReplyDelete
SchnelleJanuary 7, 2014 at 10:15 PMI can't wait to see the finished room. That bed is SO pretty! I would probably leave the dresser because it's a nice dark wood but then again I am always looking to paint furniture anymore. Good luck on the big girl bed!ReplyDelete
DavisEverAfterJanuary 7, 2014 at 10:52 PMNOOOOOOOO! Don't paint it! Have you ever stripped furniture? UGH! A pain!! It looks like it may coordinate with those stools pretty well. I know you could make it work! Can't wait to see it all!!!ReplyDelete

EllenJanuary 8, 2014 at 2:18 AMI say leave the dresser... it looks like a really nice find, pre-paint... love the jenny lind bed, though! I am trying to decide whether to convert with the toddler rail or just go straight to twin bed... number two is a few years away though, so maybe just the rail first... ReplyDelete
Camie BuckwalterJanuary 8, 2014 at 12:52 PMHave you started potty training yet. I need to start with my daughter soon. If you have started any suggestions?ReplyDelete
AnonymousJanuary 8, 2014 at 12:58 PMI'm sure both rooms will turn out perfect. I think you should do an online registry at a baby website (babiesRus, buy buy baby or target) so your blog followers can help with some things you need for the 2nd baby garvinReplyDeleteReplies

Chelsea SmithJanuary 8, 2014 at 3:53 PMIf you love painted furniture as much as I do, you may want to try Annie Sloan paint. Not only is it thick and super easy to apply, it also comes in a variety of beautiful colors. I have an antique dresser painted in a soft grey called "French Linen." It is absolutely gorgeous, especially against a white/grey wall.Good luck with the update!ReplyDelete
Linzi ScarsellaJanuary 8, 2014 at 4:41 PMSo very pretty and girlish. We did twin beds at 2 and 1 1/2 with my oldest. Good choice, I also the love the paint option your thinking of going with four the dresser. I've painted a few pieces myself with Annie Sloan chalk paint and I loved the finished product! ReplyDelete
MJanuary 8, 2014 at 5:05 PMLove the plans!!! Did harper go through a rough period of sleeping (ie not sleeping) around 18 months per chance?? My daughter has always slept great and we are going on 2 weeks of awful sleep!! Just looking for some encouragement hahaha!!ReplyDelete

StephanieJanuary 8, 2014 at 6:30 PMI will also add that Annie Sloan is SUPER easy to use- it also has low (maybe even no) VOCs. You don't have to sand or prime, just paint. You can also mix their colors to get the perfect color and it holds up really well. Love the room so far!ReplyDelete
Lauren ShagenaJanuary 8, 2014 at 7:42 PMI vote pink or coral for the dresser! I painted my current desk chair (a salvation army gem!) bright pink, and it is one of my most favorite pieces! I'm generally a fan of neutrals (very similar to your taste), but a few pops of color are the perfect room accessory. Best of luck with all of the exciting changes!ReplyDelete

Norah ThompsonJanuary 9, 2014 at 2:35 PMLove the plans for the new room. My daughter is close in age to Harper and we are also expecting #2, so will be transitioning her to a new big girl room. The dresser is a great find. If you do decide to paint it, you could try the Annie Sloan brand chalk paints. They come in a lot of colors and cover really well, so sanding/stripping isn't really needed. Thanks for all the inspiration!ReplyDelete

Ashley WentworthJanuary 20, 2014 at 3:17 PMHi there. I'm just not reading this and I had a question about the Jenny Lind. We have the crib for our 4 month old and I am slightly confused as to what the conversion kit provides. Do you have the crib, too? If so, did the conversion kit just provide the rail for the toddler bed? Is there a separate kit to transition into the twin size bed?I'm slightly confused. Thanks!! ReplyDelete
Ashley WentworthJanuary 20, 2014 at 3:19 PMDo you have the Jenny Lind crib? We have this crib for our four month old daughter and I'm a little confused as to how to transition it into the twin bed. It looks as though the conversion kit only provides the rail for the toddler bed. I was just curious if you know. Thanks (:ReplyDelete
CalJanuary 21, 2014 at 8:47 PMI second the chalk paint so no striping and priming. We just redid our bedroom and I bought a vanity table and bedside table on craigslist to paint. I made DIY chalkpaint and used the recipe 1 cup paint (make sure to use one that is NOT a paint+primer! not sure why but all the reviews I have read say this is important) 1/3 cup plaster of Paris and 1/3 cup water. Mixed the water and plaster of Paris up until smooth then mixed in the paint. It def takes two coats and you have to let it dry completely in between. After I painted, I used minwax finishing paste wax. Just wipe on, let sit 15 minutes, then buff. It creates this gorgeous satiny finish and after a day or so it is hard as a rock. Way cheaper than using Annie Sloan paints and you can pick any color paint you want.ReplyDeleteAdd commentLoad more... Wife to Brandon. Mama to Harper. Blogger, Baker & Chalkboard Maker.
